Skills shortages are set to increase as globalisation and competitive pressures take hold across sectors and industries. This according to a recent global survey of more than 350 People and Change practitioners from across the global network of KPMG member firms.

Respondents highlighted the evolved landscape of the war for talent which speaks to skills shortage. Although the concept goes as far back as 15 years, the current war for talent has changed how companies manage talent worldwide.

According to KPMG, developing clearer career paths and taking a holistic approach to talent management across the entire employee population are just some of the ways in which companies can address the skills shortage.

A significant majority of the respondents say it is more important to address the talent needs of all employees, in the context of the business and its strategy.

The survey, which took place between March and April of 2014, reveals a dramatic shift in HR methodology. HR approaches that focus on high performers have become deeply entrenched now, more than ever, in organizations.

Clearly, it’s time to turn to new, more holistic strategies for managing talent across the entire employee population.
